In Burton’s Batman, The Joker surfaced when he fell over into a vat of chemicals, bleaching his skin white, his lips red and dying his hair green. Batman Returns revealed Penguin out of the sewers of Gotham while Selina Kyle was transformed into the mysterious and sensual Catwoman. In Batman Forever, District Attorney Harvey Dent incorrectly believed Batman caused the courtroom accident which left him disfigured on one side, becoming Two-Face. The Riddler perfected a device for draining information from all the brains in Gotham. In the next movie, Batman & Robin battled Mr. Freeze. Batman Begins presented Scarecrow who endangered Gotham by the hallucinogenic gases in the water supply.
In the Dark Knight, Batman’s primary conflicts include his fight against the Joker and his strained friendship with district attorney Harvey Dent. As Jessica Zafra would put it: “If the over-praised Batman Begins was a walk on the gloomy side, The Dark Knight is a flying leap into the abyss.”
